Lots of information this week!

Last week was great! We learned that bowling balls CAN float. We also finished up our biography unit with a reading of each child's biography. This was their first time doing a presentation in front of the class and everyone did so well!

An e-mail came through my inbox this week and I thought it would be great to pass on to all of you. It's from a website called Free Fun in Austin. They have a list of free fall activities that are great for families. There are also some activities listed that are not free, but are still fun. These are great opportunities to spend time with the family, and not spend a lot of money. Check out their website for more info!

Parents of Girls -- I also saw a clip on the news about Girlstart. It's a program here in Austin to encourage girls to develop skills in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. They have FREE Saturday workshops for girls in 1st-8th grade. Check out their website if you're interested in signing up your daughters. If you want any help, let me know and I would be more than happy to help sign up. They also have lots of other programs, some free, some for a small fee throughout the year. I volunteered for this program when I was in college. They are doing great things to encourage girls in pursuing male-dominated careers.

Parents of Boys -- I will find you something!

Reminders:
- No school on Monday. Parents conferences will be held throughout the day. Please read the previous blog posts for times.
- The October PTA Meeting will be held on Tuesday at 6:30 in the cafeteria. This month there will be a presentation from Mad Science. This is a great opportunity for parents to know what is going on behind the scenes to make great events happen. There will also be opportunities to help on future events if you are interested.
- Wednesday is library day. Remember to bring your books back so you can check out new books or renew the ones you like.
- Wednesday is the Lifeskill Lunch. We will celebrate the Lifeskills of Caring, Cooperation, Effort, and Responsibility. The students who earn these awards will get a certificate and get to sit at a special table at lunch with the other Lifeskill winners.
- October 21st is the last day of the first 9 weeks. Any missing or make-up work MUST be completed and turned in by that date. Please check the Parent Home Access Center and your child's Thursday folder for the work that needs to be turned in.
- We are still collecting Box Tops. The class that collects the most Box Tops wins a pizza party. We are well on our way! This contest period ends October 25th.
- Picture Day will be on Wednesday, October 19th. Envelopes should be going home soon.

New Blog Feature:
I've added a series of videos to the right. These are just fun videos to watch that have to do with science topics that we have learned about. Maybe your kids will learn something new. I will try to update it with a different topic every week. The best part about these videos is that you can just watch them on the blog, no need to go to any other site!

What we're learning:
Math - input/output table relationships
Science - types of energy
Social Studies - finishing Native Americans, beginning explorers
Reading - main idea and details
Writing - personal narratives

Homework:
Monday - none
Tuesday - vocabulary sentences
Wednesday - input/output tables
Thursday - summary
